Handling a propane cylinder safely is crucial for ensuring both personal safety and environmental protection. Keeping the cylinder away from heat sources is an essential practice because propane is a highly flammable gas. When a propane cylinder is exposed to heat, the pressure inside the cylinder can rise dangerously, leading to the risk of a rupture or explosion. This is particularly important in maintaining the integrity of the cylinder as high temperatures can also weaken the metal material, increasing the likelihood of leaks.

In contrast, laying the cylinder on its side is not advisable as it can destabilize the pressure equilibrium and lead to liquid propane flowing out of the safety relief valve or the valve itself. Keeping the cylinder in a warm environment isn’t safe either since heat can exacerbate pressure build-up issues. Filling the cylinder completely before transport could also pose risks as propane expands when heated; leaving some space is necessary to accommodate this expansion and avoid an overpressure situation. Thus, the correct approach is to avoid heat sources altogether to ensure the safe use and storage of propane cylinders.
